Canva or Designer: How to Use Both

Not everyone has a million-dollar marketing budget to work with. Lucky for non-profits and small business, there are many design tools and options available for even small budget teams.

Canva is one of the popular design tools that has great benefits for non-profits and small businesses who don’t have a graphic designer on the payroll. However, getting started on a new marketing or branding project can be overwhelming.

So how do you make the most of your limited marketing budget to create an impactful brand or marketing campaign?

1.     Use the Brand Kit. By partnering with me—Heather White Design—I can help you create a branding guide to help launch your organization’s identity and give you a starting point for all your future marketing materials. Already have the branding guide? I can also help you get it set up in the Brand Kit in Canva.

2.     Outline 2 to 3 fonts to use in all your marketing materials. I can help you identify the best options available in Canva that will work with your brand (as well as across other platforms). Select a font to use for large headings, one for sub-headings, and another for standard text. By utilizing the same fonts across all materials, you will create a lasting image that is recognized by your clients and customers. And don’t forget, most fonts have multiple variations in weight and style so you do have a lot of flexibility!

3.     Pick no more than 4 colors.  Color options are endless, but the last thing you want is for each marketing piece to look like a different part of the rainbow. By selecting a few colors, you will help your target audience identify your campaign.

4.     Stick with 2 to 3 template styles when using Canva. Select templates that vary from each other so they can adapt to any style of marketing piece, but make sure you update them to follow your organization’s branding. By limiting your selection, you won’t feel overwhelmed when it’s time to create a new piece.  I can also help create custom templates if you can’t find exactly what you are looking for.

Not everyone has the budget to hire out their marketing campaigns, but with the help of a great designer and tools like Canva, you can have professional business materials to present to clients and customers.
